Jayapura,-- 98 international non-governmental organizations, academics,
politicians and people from the Pacific appealed to the leaders of the
Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), in order to give full support to the
application of West Papua that have been proposed to become a member of
MSG.
Through a press release sent to the editor Jubi, Tuesday (15/10), a group of organizations from Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Philippines, India and the United States have highlighted the threat to the survival of indigenous peoples in West Papua Melanesia, whose population is declining drastic. Also the human rights violations that are taking place in West Papua, including the denial of the right to self-determination.
This letter is written through the action of solidarity with thousands of people of West Papua who over the years have asked for the support of their Melanesian neighbors to acknowledge their suffering. Melanesian brothers asked teases recognition of the identity of the Melanesian people of West Papua through membership in MSG.
These organizations offend human rights violations that are still going on to this day. Last year there were hundreds of arrests against the Papuans, hundreds of political prisoners, dozens of reports of torture of indigenous peoples, and murder by the Indonesian security forces, including the shooting of a 11-year-old child.
The letter also appreciate the role of MSG which is expected to play an important role in bringing peace to a greater share in the region of Melanesia. This potential is expected to be realized until West Papua received in MSG.
