Release of Human Rights Report in Papua 2013 -

On May 2nd 2013, Ms. Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed her deep concern about the use of excessive force by the police forces of the Government of Indonesia on 30 April 2013 in Sorong, Papua, during preparations for a peaceful demonstration to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the administrative transfer of Papua to Indonesia. As a result, two indigenous Papuans, Mr. Abner Malagawak and Mr. Thomas Blesya were killed. A third person, Salomina Klaibin died in hospital a few days later. Two others were wounded. Similar incidents took place in Biak and Timika, where at least 27 protesters were arrested.
This parallel event aims at critically reviewing the human rights situation in Papua, especially after the adoption of the second UPR recommendation of Indonesia, the plan of the visit of SR on Freedom of _expression_ and the first review of Indonesia under the Human Rights Committee, scheduled to take place in July 2013.

The focus will be given
on the freedom of _expression_ in Papua and Papuan political prisoners. On
the occasion of this event, Franciscans International (FI), International
Coalition for Papua (ICP), will present the report Human Rights in
Papua 2013, which portrays the violation of civil and political
rights, as well as economic, social and cultural rights. The TAPOL
report, No Political Prisoners? The suppression of political protest
in West Papua, will also be available during the meeting..
