Claims of deadly police crackdown in West Papua

0 komentar
West Papuan activist groups claim two people have been killed after police reacted violently to protests this week.

The West Papua Advocacy Team and the East Timor and Indonesia Action Network say a peaceful protest was held on May 1 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Indonesian control over the province.

In a joint statement released on Saturday, the groups say police reacted violently to the protest, leaving two people dead, and many more wounded and detained.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has recently expressed serious concerns over the crackdown on mass demonstrations across Papua.

"These latest incidents are unfortunate examples of the ongoing suppression of freedom of expression and excessive use of force in Papua," she said in a statement.

"I urge the government of Indonesia to allow peaceful protest and hold accountable those involved in abuses."
